Do I Need Travel Insurance?

In most cases the answer is a definitive “YES!”

All individuals, whether or not you have a disability, have the possibility of unexpected issues arising before a vacation. When a tour company is booking group travel they are most likely pre-paying for the lodging, activities, meals, supervision, etc. So, in the event an emergency arises within a month of your departure date, and you need to cancel your pre-paid vacation, that money most-likely has already been spent and cannot be refunded. Please check the refund and cancellation policy of your tour company before you book.

Usually, you will be able to use the funds for your airfare minus any change fees imposed by the airline, if you use it within a year of the initial booking for the same airline and the same traveler. However, since many airlines have raised their change fees, the change fees are sometimes higher than the actual airfare. In those cases that money, too, is lost.

When purchasing travel insurance it is important to do your research. Are there pre-existing condition exclusions? What does it cover? There are other potential problems that you do have control over. For example, it is extremely important to arrive at the airport at least two hours before your flight’s departure to avoid complications with boarding. It is also important to make sure you have the proper identification with you. Put your important medications in your carry on. That way if you luggage is lost or mishandled you have those with you.

Most travel insurance companies cover medical emergencies. They will most likely require information from the customer’s doctor or hospital. If you are booked on an Exceptional Vacations tour, and you need to file a claim with your travel insurance company, Exceptional Vacations staff will provide your travel insurance company with the trip price documentation as needed or required.

If the customer is traveling on a cruise, Exceptional Vacations can add the cost of the cruise line insurance to the customer’s statement upon request. However, the same due diligence should be applied to this insurance as it would for outside companies. Exceptional Vacations usually refers customers to TravelSafe because they have a cancel for any reason policy. Again, though, please look into the various policies and find the one that is the best fit for you.

Exceptional Vacations understands the needs and special circumstances of our customers. Travel insurance can alleviate some worry and protect you in the event of unexpected medical emergencies, lost luggage, etc. We wish everyone safe, fun and “Exceptional Vacations”!
